The U.S. is not planning to resume military aid to Ukraine even if a mineral resources agreement is signed, NBC News reports.
According to sources, Donald Trump insists that this step alone is not enough—he wants to see Kyiv’s willingness to engage in peace negotiations and make compromises, including territorial concessions to Russia.
As the publication notes, Trump has made it clear to his aides that while the mineral resources deal is important, the key factor remains a shift in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s stance on conflict resolution. In particular, conditions such as territorial transfers, elections, and even Zelensky’s possible resignation are being considered.
This week, a meeting between U.S. and Ukrainian officials is set to take place in Saudi Arabia, with a special focus on Kyiv’s readiness for compromises. Previously, U.S. media had already reported that an agreement on mineral resources alone would not be sufficient for military aid to resume—Washington expects Ukraine to take concrete steps toward a peaceful resolution.
