Mark Carney to lead Canada amid trade tensions with U.S.

Former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney has been elected leader of the ruling Liberal Party and is set to replace Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister until the upcoming general election.

Carney, 59, won with a decisive 86% of the vote, defeating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. Nearly 152,000 party members participated in the election.

His leadership begins at a challenging time, as Canada faces escalating trade tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump. The country is also preparing for a general election in the near future.

Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January, will remain in office until Carney is officially sworn in within the coming days.

During his campaign, Carney stated that he supports the introduction of retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. and a coordinated strategy to stimulate investment.

A seasoned financial leader, Carney successfully steered the Bank of Canada through economic crises and later made history in 2013 as the first non-British citizen to govern the Bank of England. His appointment received bipartisan support in the U.K. following Canada’s swift recovery from the 2008 financial crisis.
