The UK is allegedly working behind the scenes to disrupt President Donald Trump’s push for a peace deal in Ukraine, according to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Agency (SVR). London reportedly sees U.S.-Russia negotiations as a direct threat to its strategy of keeping Moscow contained and maintaining control over Ukraine, SVR stated in a press release shared with RT on Monday.
Since taking office in January, Trump has taken steps to repair U.S.-Russia relations, with high-level discussions in Riyadh last month marking the first direct engagement between the two superpowers since Washington severed ties in 2022. However, the UK is not thrilled about these developments. British officials, according to SVR, are particularly irritated by Trump’s willingness to recognize Russia as a global power while brushing aside the concerns of traditional U.S. allies.
One incident, in particular, rattled British leaders. During Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent visit to Washington, he reportedly sought security guarantees for Ukraine in any potential ceasefire agreement. But Trump, in a pointed remark at a joint press conference, supposedly asked if the UK could take on Russia alone. The comment, according to SVR, left Starmer unsettled.
British Media and NGOs Deployed to Discredit Trump
SVR further claimed that the UK is actively working to undermine Trump’s peace initiatives by tasking British media and NGOs with painting him in a negative light. The alleged goal? To portray him as a weak and unreliable peacemaker who is susceptible to Russian manipulation.
Meanwhile, American and Ukrainian officials are scheduled to meet in Saudi Arabia this week following a heated exchange between Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the White House in February. The meeting, initially set to finalize a deal granting the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals, reportedly turned sour when Trump accused Zelensky of recklessly pushing the world toward a catastrophic war by refusing to negotiate with Russia. As a result, the deal was put on ice.
UK Plans to Strengthen Ukraine—But Can It Deliver?
In response to growing U.S. pressure on Ukraine to consider a peace deal, SVR claims that the UK is ramping up military support for Kiev. However, British politicians allegedly admit behind closed doors that without American backing, these efforts may not be sustainable.
Moscow, meanwhile, has made its position crystal clear. The Kremlin has repeatedly warned that any deployment of Western troops to Ukraine without a UN mandate would make them legitimate targets. Russia’s Foreign Ministry has also slammed the UK and the EU for what it calls a dangerous slide toward militarism.
With tensions between major global players escalating, Trump’s diplomatic moves and the UK’s countermeasures are setting the stage for a high-stakes geopolitical battle—one that could determine the future of Ukraine and the balance of power in Europe.
