Germans continue coffee craze despite rising prices

Coffee remains one of the most beloved beverages in Germany, with people averaging around four cups a day. Recently, the nation’s coffee consumption has been on the rise again, alongside its price hikes.

In 2024, the average German drank 163 liters of coffee, reflecting a return to pre-pandemic consumption levels after a period of decline. Alongside the increased consumption, there’s a growing preference for organic coffee and ethically certified products. Currently, one in five coffee packages features eco-friendly labels like Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance. Instant coffee consumption has increased by 2%, while pre-mixed products, including sugar and powdered milk, have seen a 6% rise in demand.

However, coffee’s growing popularity is being met with a significant price increase. Experts predict a potential 30% price hike for larger coffee packages by 2025. Coffee capsules have become 25% more expensive since 2020, while coffee beans have seen a price jump of 20%.

Coffee chain Tchibo has recently raised its prices, with increases of 50 cents to 1 euro per pound depending on the variety, effective since mid-February. Climate change is largely to blame for these price increases. In 2024, Brazil and Vietnam experienced severe weather events, including droughts and excessive rainfall, both of which have negatively impacted coffee bean harvests.
