Greenland has announced the results of its parliamentary elections, held in the shadow of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks about taking control of the island.
The center-right Demokraatit party secured the most votes, marking an unexpected victory. While the party supports Greenlandic independence, it advocates for a gradual transition rather than an immediate break from Denmark. Coming in second was the Naleraq party, which pushes for a swift separation from Denmark and stronger ties with the United States.
The results indicate that many Greenlanders prioritize healthcare, education, and cultural heritage alongside the independence debate.
Pre-election forecasts had favored the Ataqatigiit party, led by Prime Minister Mute Egede, with Siumut expected to place second. However, both parties, long dominant in Greenlandic politics, finished in third and fourth place, respectively.
