A rising number of Swedes are ditching American products and services in protest, driven by frustration over former U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to ending the war in Ukraine—an issue that has been a top priority for European leaders for years.
A recent poll by the Verian Institute, commissioned by SVT, found that nearly 29% of Swedes have deliberately avoided buying U.S. goods in the past month. Another 40% are considering joining the boycott soon.
Social media is fueling the movement, with calls to reject American cars, streaming platforms, and food brands spreading rapidly. A Facebook group backing the boycott has already amassed over 65,000 members, while mainstream Swedish media outlets like SVT are amplifying the initiative.
The boycott has gained the most traction among left-leaning voters. Among Left Party supporters, 40% report actively avoiding American goods, while 36% of Social Democrat voters say the same. Meanwhile, right-wing Swedish Democrats are the least likely to participate, with only 23% claiming to have joined the effort.
Verian conducted the survey between March 7 and 10, 2025, polling just over 1,000 randomly selected individuals. With the movement growing, Sweden’s stance on U.S. relations appears to be shifting in an unprecedented way.
