Naples residents sleep in the street after massive earthquake

Many residents of Naples and surrounding areas spent the night outside, in streets and cars, after a powerful earthquake shook buildings and sent debris crashing down.

Italian seismologists reported that the 4.4-magnitude tremor struck at 01:25 local time Thursday at a shallow depth of three kilometers. Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey measured it as a 4.2-magnitude quake at a depth of 10 km.

The quake caused power outages in parts of Naples, while in the nearby town of Pozzuoli, close to the epicenter, one person was rescued from the rubble of a partially collapsed house.

Naples sits on the Phlegraean Fields, a vast volcanic basin that makes the region particularly prone to seismic activity. The earthquake was felt across several areas of the Campania region, according to Italian media.
