Mark Carney, the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, took the oath of office and officially became the country’s prime minister following the resignation of Justin Trudeau.
The ceremony took place at Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor General of Canada. The 59-year-old Carney is the first prime minister in Canadian history without political experience. He previously worked at the central banks of Canada and the UK and also served as a freelance advisor to Trudeau.
Alongside Carney, the new government was sworn in. Most ministers retained their positions, including Defense Minister Bill Blair and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly.
Carney takes office as prime minister amid a trade war with the United States. He previously stated that Canada would never become part of the US and promised to maintain tariffs on American goods until the US shows respect.
