On March 14, leaders of political parties in Greenland expressed strong protest against Donald Trump’s repeated statements regarding the potential annexation of the island. The statement, signed by the party leaders, was distributed by the Greenlandic government.
It emphasizes that such statements about the seizure and control of Greenland are unacceptable. The party leaders noted that they consider Trump’s behavior to be inappropriate for allies in a defense alliance.
“As party leaders, we cannot accept such threats,” the statement reads. It also notes that the parliamentary parties of Greenland are distancing themselves from attempts to divide the country. “Greenland is our common country, and we all support it,” they stated.
The meeting was initiated by acting Prime Minister of Greenland, Múte Egede, who convened the gathering after Trump’s latest remarks. During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on March 13, Trump stated that the annexation of Greenland could become a reality as it is necessary for “international security.”
