U.N. judge found guilty of slavery

Lydia Mugambe, a judge from Uganda, has been found guilty of slavery in the United Kingdom, according to the Independent.

She forced a young woman to work as a maid and take care of children for free. The prosecution proved that Mugambe exploited her victim by taking advantage of her lack of knowledge about her rights to paid labor and deceiving her about the purpose of her trip to the UK.

It was also revealed that Mugambe conspired with Uganda’s Deputy High Commissioner, John Leonard Mugerwa, to help organize the woman’s trip, promising a judge involved in the case that she would sponsor the journey. The investigation revealed that the judge intended to “find someone who would make her life easier while costing as little as possible.”

Mugambe denied the charges, claiming that she had always treated her victim with love, care, and patience.
