Hungary is once again demanding the removal of references to military support for Ukraine in the conclusions of the upcoming EU summit.
As the European Council prepares to discuss the draft conclusions on March 20-21, Hungarian representatives are advocating for a reduction of the “Ukraine” section, specifically asking to exclude mentions of continued military aid to Ukraine and the concept of “peace from a position of strength.”
This development was reported anonymously to European Pravda by a European diplomat involved in drafting the summit conclusions.
The EU diplomat highlighted that Hungary, following its stance during the preparation of the emergency “security” EU summit conclusions on March 6, is pushing for a brief reference to Ukraine, focusing solely on the EU’s support for current peace efforts. “Hungary is asking for a very short text on Ukraine, only stating the EU’s support for current efforts to establish peace,” the source said.
In contrast, other EU member states are advocating for a stronger statement that reaffirms continued support for Ukraine, including military assistance, and emphasizes the goal of achieving “peace from a position of strength.”
The draft conclusions will be discussed on Tuesday, March 18, during the EU General Affairs Council meeting, with the final document set to be approved by EU leaders at the European Council meeting on March 20-21.
