Italy reaffirms non-participation in military mission in Ukraine

Italy has reiterated that it has no intention of deploying military forces to Ukraine as part of any potential peace agreement with Russia.

The confirmation came from the Italian government following Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s participation in a virtual meeting of the “coalition of the willing,” organized by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The Italian government stressed that ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and security requires a just and lasting peace.

“Prime Minister Meloni confirmed that Italy intends to continue working with European and Western partners, as well as the United States, to define reliable and effective security guarantees. However, she reiterated that Italy does not plan to participate in any potential military forces on the ground,” the statement said.

Following the March 15 meeting, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the coalition’s efforts are now moving into an operational phase, with military officials set to convene in the UK on Thursday to discuss strategies for bolstering a future peace agreement.
