Macron pushes EU to ditch US weapons and buy European

Emmanuel Macron is on a mission to shift the European defense landscape and reduce reliance on American arms, making the case for homegrown European alternatives.

The French president is actively lobbying EU nations to abandon their reliance on US-made military equipment and choose local products instead. “My goal is to convince European countries that are used to buying American,” Macron said in a recent interview. He pointed to alternatives such as the French-Italian SAMP/T missile system for those purchasing the American-made Patriot and the Rafale fighter jet for those eyeing the F-35.

This push comes as European NATO members, like the Netherlands and Belgium, double down on their purchase of US fighter jets. Portugal, on the other hand, is hesitant to replace its aging F-16s with F-35s due to the shifting stance of the United States within NATO. Macron’s response? He’s tasked French defense firms with slashing red tape and cutting costs to become more competitive in the global defense market.

As the conversation shifts to the ongoing war in Ukraine, Macron has also made his position clear. He dismissed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ceasefire demands as “unacceptable,” arguing that such conditions would only freeze the conflict without ensuring future security.

Macron also discussed future plans for European military involvement in Ukraine, hinting at a possible deployment of European troops for training and support, with each country contributing a few thousand soldiers. His broader vision includes a reform of France’s “National Universal Service,” a voluntary program for young people, but he flatly rejected the idea of reinstating compulsory military service.

In essence, Macron is attempting to navigate a fine line, championing European self-sufficiency in defense while also pushing for practical solutions to ongoing geopolitical issues.
