Right-wing candidate leads in first round of Romanian presidential elections, survey finds

In the first round of Romania’s upcoming presidential elections in May, a right-wing candidate would receive the most support, but in the second round, Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan holds the advantage.

This is according to a poll conducted by AtlasIntel.

Romania is set to hold a rerun of its presidential elections in two rounds on May 4 and May 18 after the Constitutional Court annulled the previous vote in December due to allegations of Russian interference in favor of right-wing candidate Călin Georgescu, who had been leading.

After Georgescu’s candidacy was blocked by the court, two prominent right-wing politicians—AUR party leader George Simion and POT party leader Anamaria Gavrilă—agreed that only one of them would run if both were approved as candidates.

The Central Electoral Bureau has now accepted both candidacies, but it remains unclear which of the two will withdraw.

The AtlasIntel poll, conducted between March 13 and 15, found that either Simion or Gavrilă would receive the most votes in the first round. If Simion is the right-wing candidate, he would get 30.4% of the vote. If Gavrilă runs instead, she would receive 30.2%.

However, Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan, who is running as an independent, is expected to win the decisive second round, thanks to broad support across different voter demographics—though a significant number of respondents remain undecided.
