Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that the European Union would not be able to remain competitive without gas transit through Ukraine. According to him, Bratislava will continue its diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring gas supplies through Ukrainian territory.
Fico said that during a meeting with EU ambassadors, he emphasized the importance of maintaining transit. He noted that Slovakia is interested in continuing gas transportation to the West and intends to seek appropriate solutions. Otherwise, the country will suffer significant economic losses, which, according to the prime minister, should be compensated.
Earlier, Fico stated that the cessation of transit through Ukraine would cost Slovakia 500 million euros annually. The country would also lose about 1 billion euros due to higher gas prices. Overall, according to his estimates, the EU could face losses of around 70 billion euros.
