Switzerland’s largest airport drops French announcements

At Switzerland’s busiest airport, located in Zurich, a decision has been made to stop making announcements in French as part of a new “minimizing announcements” concept.

Zurich Airport spokesperson Livia Caluori explained that the decision to discontinue French-language announcements aligns with “international trends” and was made after analyzing user data.

From now on, announcements will only be made in English and German, according to the publication.

According to Caluori, five years ago, the company managing the airport analyzed data on the traffic to its website and found that only 1% of users were using the French version.

However, the spokesperson added that passengers can use integrated browser translators if they need information in French.

The ground services provider Swissport also confirmed the language changes in response to a query from Keystone-SDA, adding that starting in July 2024, ground staff will no longer make announcements in French.
