On March 19, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will present a new roadmap, “Readiness 2030,” aimed at enhancing the combat readiness and defense capabilities of the EU by 2030.
She announced this on March 18 during a speech at the Royal Danish Military Academy in Copenhagen. The roadmap outlines the rearmament and establishment of a defense base for reliable deterrence.
She highlighted four key priorities of the plan:
Increasing EU defense spending to release 800 billion euros for defense, including the creation of a new SAFE instrument for quick access to 150 billion euros.
Addressing gaps in EU needs and capabilities, including the creation of a network of transport corridors, enhancing air and missile defense, and investing in artillery and ammunition.
Strengthening Europe’s defense-industrial base to increase its independence in the armaments sector.
At the beginning of March, von der Leyen presented the Rearm Europe plan, worth up to 800 billion euros, which was unanimously supported by EU leaders at the March 6 summit.
