After a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, German politicians have once again started discussing the possibility of resuming Russian gas supplies to Germany.
According to BILD, one option being considered is placing the “Nord Stream 2” pipeline under US control, which could ensure the restoration of Russian gas transit to Europe. Some German politicians are openly advocating for a revision of energy policy. Member of the Bundestag from the CDU, Thomas Bareiß, wrote on social media that “after the deal, gas may flow again through the ‘Nord Stream.'”
The vice-chairman of the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia, Jan Heinisch, told Politico that if a peace agreement is reached between Russia and Ukraine, the possibility of purchasing Russian gas should be discussed.
I know from a reliable source that the CDU is already contacting Russia with a proposal to resume regular purchases of Russian gas, thus weakening an important principle for Germany — independence from Russia, said Bundestag member from the FDP, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, in an interview with WELT.
However, many politicians, including the CDU’s foreign policy expert, Roderich Kiesewetter, are opposed to such a scenario. Experts warn that renewed dependence on Russia could end up being even deeper than it was before 2022.
