Friedrich Merz: “If we fail on migration reform, my career is over”

The leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and future Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, stated in an interview at the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’s Reader’s Congress that a failure of the migration reform would mark the end of his career.

He acknowledged that he carries a “very high level of trust” and faces criticism even from members of his own party. Merz emphasized that the migration reform is “a very deep adjustment,” and its successful implementation is critically important for fulfilling the future government’s commitments.

The CDU advocates for a tougher approach to migration policy, including the practice of denying entry at the border. However, the Social Democrats will only support this measure if neighboring countries agree.

Merz also mentioned that he has the support of French President Emmanuel Macron, with whom he agrees on tightening migration policies.
