A quarter of Ukrainian refugees in the UK are facing difficulties finding housing and work due to the cancellation of visas under the Homes for Ukraine program and uncertainty about visa extensions, reports The Telegraph.
According to a study conducted by the University of Birmingham, 41% of respondents said they lost the opportunity to secure new jobs because of visa issues, while 22% said their employment contracts were not renewed. Additionally, 26% reported being unable to extend their leases, and 24% were unable to sign new rental agreements.
Of the 250,000 Ukrainian refugees granted asylum in the UK, 94% plan to apply for a visa extension. However, due to the long waiting period for decisions and the fact that applications could only be submitted from February 4, 2025, many have struggled with finding jobs and housing, putting them at risk of homelessness and unemployment.
Moreover, many are facing rising rent prices and exploitation by landlords who are taking advantage of visa uncertainty to increase prices several times over.
Visa uncertainty remains a significant issue for Ukrainian refugees in the UK.
