New coalition agreement signed in Estonia after Social Democrats’ exclusion

On March 24, the Reform Party, led by Prime Minister Kristen Mihal, and Estonia 200 signed a new coalition agreement, reshaping the country’s government following the exclusion of the Social Democrats.

Mihal and Estonia 200 leader Kristina Kallas signed the agreement, which outlines the priorities for their collaboration. The document also provides for the addition of five new ministers, while one ministerial position will be removed. As a result, several government positions will undergo changes, including those responsible for social affairs, energy and the environment, infrastructure, internal affairs, regional development, and agriculture.

Later on Monday, the proposed new ministers will be discussed with President Alar Karis. The new government ministers are expected to take their oaths in a parliamentary session on Tuesday.

This reshuffle follows the Estonian Social Democrats’ announcement on March 10 that their coalition partners had decided to end their cooperation. The three parties had formed a coalition government nearly two years ago, after the 2023 elections. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, leader of the Reform Party, initially held the position, but after her nomination for a European Commission role, leadership passed to Kristen Mihal.
