The Polish government has issued a decree temporarily restricting the right to seek asylum. The decision was published in the Government Legislative Journal on Thursday and took effect immediately.
The suspension of asylum applications will last for 60 days and applies to the Polish-Belarusian border. On Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the government’s move to suspend the right to asylum, fulfilling his previous pledge to take action “without a minute’s delay.”
Earlier that day, President Andrzej Duda, who signed the law limiting asylum rights, addressed the issue, urging the Prime Minister to implement the decree and take active measures to protect Poland’s borders.
The Polish government has also announced plans to enhance patrols along the Polish-Belarusian border in response to growing hybrid threats.
