Friedrich Merz pushes for European alliance to combat illegal immigration

Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is spearheading efforts to form a new European “migration axis” aimed at curbing the flow of refugees into Germany.

According to reports from BILD, Merz is seeking to establish an alliance with neighboring countries, including Poland, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and France. The core objective of this alliance is to implement “permanent rejections at the border” and enforce stricter migration policies across the region.

Interestingly, even Nancy Faeser, Germany’s Interior Minister from the SPD, has voiced support for the initiative. Sources within the government have revealed that Faeser has already engaged in discussions with Austrian Minister Gerhard Karner on the proposal. Despite the SPD’s previous stance that any border rejections should be “coordinated with neighboring countries,” Merz is now pushing to secure a more direct agreement with them.

Merz draws inspiration from Poland’s approach, particularly the plan outlined by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in January. This plan argues that the “emergency situation allowing rejections within European law” has already arrived. Furthermore, Poland has gone a step further by suspending its national asylum law for illegal migrants.
