The suspect in the stabbing of five people in central Amsterdam has been identified as a 30-year-old Ukrainian citizen from the Donetsk region, though police say he was carrying multiple identity documents under different names.
Amsterdam police arrested the man at the scene of the attack, which took place near Dam Square on March 27. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether he is from the Ukrainian-controlled part of Donetsk or an area under occupation. The suspect had checked into a hotel in Amsterdam the day before the attack.
Law enforcement faced challenges in verifying his identity due to the presence of multiple documents. However, details regarding the additional names or nationalities on these documents have not been disclosed.
The suspect was injured during the incident and is currently receiving medical care in a penitentiary hospital. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 1 for a hearing regarding further legal action. Police have not yet commented on his possible motives.
The attack left five people injured, including two elderly Americans, a 26-year-old Polish man, a 73-year-old Belgian woman, and a 19-year-old Dutch woman. A British tourist managed to restrain the attacker until law enforcement arrived.
