Trump pushes for more aggressive tariff measures ahead of April 2 announcement

U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing his administration to adopt more radical tariff policies, with plans to announce his new strategy on April 2.

According to The Washington Post, sources close to the administration report that Trump is insisting on bolder tariff actions to overhaul the U.S. economy, despite suggestions from some of his allies for a less extreme approach.

Trump’s advisers are currently engaged in intense debates over the scale of the potential tariffs, which could have a significant impact on U.S. foreign trade, possibly affecting trillions of dollars. The most likely scenario involves implementing tariffs on goods from 15% of countries deemed the “worst trading partners” of the U.S., representing nearly 90% of imports.

Earlier, Trump confirmed that on April 2, the U.S. would introduce “reciprocal” trade tariffs, designed to match the tariff rates that other countries impose on U.S. exports.

Trump has referred to April 2 as “Liberation Day,” emphasizing that the new tariffs will create American jobs and generate trillions of dollars in new revenue for the federal budget. As he put it, “reciprocal” trade tariffs will help restore economic power to the U.S.
