American billionaire Elon Musk has shared his perspective on the conviction of Marine Le Pen in France over a case of fraudulent employment in the European Parliament, which bars her from running in the presidential elections.
Musk expressed his opinion on X, stating that “radical leftists” were behind the verdict.
“When the radical left can’t win via democratic vote, they abuse the legal system to jail their opponents. This is their standard playbook throughout the world,” Musk wrote.
On March 31, the verdict was announced in the case concerning the alleged fraudulent hiring of assistants by MEPs from Le Pen’s National Rally, who were paid from the European Parliament’s budget but reportedly worked for the party instead.
Nine MEPs from the party, including Marine Le Pen, and twelve assistants were defendants in the case.
Le Pen was sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence, two years of house arrest with an electronic bracelet, and a five-year ban from holding elected office. This means she will be unable to run for president in the 2027 election.
Le Pen’s lawyer has stated that she will appeal the verdict. However, as long as it remains in effect, the ban on her candidacy will stand.
