The European Commission plans to announce its first fines for Apple and Meta this week for violating the EU’s digital competition rules, potentially escalating the trade conflict between the European Union and the United States.
The regulator has concluded three investigations into these tech giants: two against Apple and one against Meta. The companies are expected to be fined under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
This measure could prompt retaliatory actions from the US. Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that the European law harms American companies’ interests and could lead to the introduction of counter trade tariffs.
According to sources, Apple’s fine is related to restrictions on developers preventing them from communicating offers to iPhone users. As for Meta, the sanctions concern its policies on the use of personal data.
Despite escalating trade tensions, the European Commission remains committed to strict regulation of tech giants, emphasizing the importance of new competition rules in the digital market.
