Russian energy giant Gazprom will significantly increase its natural gas supplies to Slovakia via Hungary starting on April 1. This was reported by Vojtech Ferencz, CEO of Slovakia’s largest energy operator, SPP.
Since February 2024, Gazprom has been supplying gas to SPP via the TurkStream pipeline, and from April, the supply volumes are set to double. The current contract between SPP and Gazprom Export is valid until 2034.
Previously, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that despite the halt of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, Gazprom would continue supplying Slovakia in accordance with existing agreements.
Slovakia has repeatedly emphasized its interest in maintaining gas transit through its territory to Western countries. Fico warned that the discontinuation of this route could result in significant economic losses: the country may lose around €500 million annually in transit revenues, while additional gas costs could amount to approximately €1 billion. According to his estimates, the total financial impact on the EU due to the halt of gas transit through Ukraine could reach €70 billion.
