Hundreds of navigation failures recorded in Lithuania in March

Throughout March, Lithuania’s air traffic control authority, Oro Navigacija, received several hundred reports from pilots about navigation failures.

This was reported by company representative Ingrida Daugirdė in a comment to Lithuanian broadcaster LRT.

According to Oro Navigacija, more than 300 reports of GPS interference were received from pilots during the month.

This statement came after an incident on the evening of Saturday, March 29, when a Ryanair flight from London Stansted Airport to Vilnius Airport was forced to abort its landing due to GPS interference. The aircraft successfully landed on its second attempt.

It is worth noting that Baltic state officials have previously stated that GPS jamming affects civil aviation near the Russian-Belarusian borders. In January, a flight from the UK to Vilnius was unable to land in the Lithuanian capital due to navigation disruptions.

Additionally, last fall, a Boeing 737-476(SF) cargo plane crashed near Vilnius Airport. The aircraft belonged to the Spanish airline Swiftair and was used by DHL for parcel transportation. It was en route from Leipzig, Germany.
