The Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office has launched a pre-trial investigation into the deaths of U.S. soldiers after an M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle was pulled from a swamp at the Pabradė training ground.
Lithuania’s Prosecutor General, Nida Grunskienė, confirmed the investigation, stating that a prosecutor had arrived at the scene and that her office is handling the case.
“A pre-trial investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of death,” Grunskienė informed journalists at the Lithuanian Seimas (parliament).
There is still no official confirmation on whether the four missing U.S. soldiers were inside the vehicle when it was recovered.
The soldiers and the armored vehicle were first reported missing on March 25. The vehicle was later located in a swamp on March 26, leading to an extensive recovery operation involving Lithuanian, U.S., and Polish military forces, along with local emergency specialists.
