Right-wing candidate leads in Romania’s presidential race weeks before election

George Simion, the presidential candidate representing Romania’s right-wing “Alliance for the Union of Romanians” (AUR), is leading in voter support just weeks ahead of the election, according to a recent poll.

The survey, conducted by the sociological center Verifield and shared on Facebook by presidential candidate and Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan, indicates that Simion would secure 35% of the vote in the first round.

Independent candidates Victor Ponta (21.1%) and Nicușor Dan (20.8%) follow in second and third place, while Crin Antonescu, backed by the ruling coalition, is projected to receive 16.4%. No other candidate polled above 5%.

The poll was conducted between March 24 and 28, 2025, with a margin of error of 2.95% and a confidence level of 95%.

This election follows a controversial annulment of the first round in December 2024, when Romania’s Constitutional Court ruled the results invalid due to alleged Russian interference.
