Tragic mine accident in Spain claims five lives

A devastating accident at the Cerredo mine in Degaña, Asturias, has resulted in the deaths of five miners.

According to Reuters, citing regional emergency services, the incident occurred on Monday, March 31. Initial reports suggested at least nine people were injured, but authorities later confirmed that five had lost their lives. Four others sustained injuries, while two workers emerged unharmed.

Emergency responders stated that the accident was caused by a machine malfunction inside the mine at 9:32 AM local time. Rescue efforts involved three helicopters and two ambulances.

In response to the tragedy, regional leader Adrián Barbón declared two days of mourning, while Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families.
