Advisors to former U.S. President Donald Trump have prepared a proposal to introduce import tariffs of approximately 20% on most goods brought into the country, The Washington Post reports, citing sources.
Earlier, Trump announced plans to impose retaliatory tariffs against China and several other countries starting April 2, calling the date “Liberation Day.” The administration clarified that the new measures would target 15 countries with the largest trade surpluses with the U.S. or those applying discriminatory tariffs.
The White House aides have prepared a proposal to introduce tariffs of approximately 20% on most imported goods, the article states. However, a final decision has not yet been made, and several options are still under consideration.
According to sources, one of the scenarios being discussed involves raising tariffs on products from nearly all countries. One of the publication’s sources noted that the White House believes increasing tariffs, along with additional duties on automobiles and pharmaceutical products, could generate over six trillion dollars in revenue for the U.S. Officials suggest that this revenue could be used to provide benefits or dividends to most Americans.
Nevertheless, sources indicate that the administration is still considering imposing different tariff rates for individual countries.
