As of April 1, therapists in the Czech Republic are now authorized to prescribe medicinal cannabis extracts to patients suffering from chronic severe pain.
This move expands access to treatment, as previously only specialists were allowed to prescribe cannabis.
General practitioners can now prescribe cannabis for patients experiencing severe pain, such as that associated with spinal issues. However, conditions like cancer and Parkinson’s disease, along with the prescription of painkillers for these conditions, continue to fall under the domain of specialized doctors.
The new reform also increases the prescription validity period from one to three months, though the monthly prescription limit remains at 180 grams, with 30 grams covered by insurance. Additionally, minors in the terminal stages of illness can now receive cannabis treatment, but only under the care of palliative care specialists.
