Greece will spend around €25 billion by 2036 on the “most radical” modernization of its armed forces in its modern history. This was announced by Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday.
According to Mitsotakis, this project, which includes, among other things, updating the air defense system, is aimed at addressing rapidly changing geopolitical challenges and weakening transatlantic ties.
“The plan provides for the most radical transformation of the armed forces in the country’s modern history. The world is changing at unpredictable speeds,” he said.
The Greek prime minister also added that the new initiative is meant to make the country a “key link” in the European Union’s defense mechanism, ensuring one of the “most modern” armies in the EU.
