In Germany, more than 300 police officers and emergency responders fall victim to crimes every day, as revealed in the 2024 crime statistics.
The total number of such incidents reached 117,548 last year, with 109,545 of these involving attacks on police officers. This marks a 5.1% rise from the previous year.
Despite efforts to enhance police equipment and expand the force, Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized that these measures are insufficient.
“We need more solidarity in society. Violence against the police and rescuers concerns everyone and should not be indifferent to anyone,” she said.
On average, one police officer in the country is seriously injured almost every three days. Last year, Officer Rufan Laur tragically lost his life in Mannheim while attempting to stop an Islamist attacker armed with a knife.
“Violence on the streets is getting out of control, elderly people and women live in constant fear, and the threat of terrorism is at its highest,” warned Rainer Wendt, head of the police union.
In Berlin, police spokesman Benjamin Jendro highlighted the alarming frequency of attacks, stating, “a police officer is attacked every hour.” For the first time, the number of foreign suspects involved in these crimes has surpassed that of German suspects.
