China has called on the United States to immediately remove the imposed tariffs and has threatened retaliatory measures. This was reported by Reuters, citing a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
According to Beijing, US tariffs disrupt the balance of interests in international trade. The ministry’s statement emphasizes that the United States “has long been reaping significant benefits” from global economic engagement.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of additional tariffs on Chinese goods—34% on top of the already existing 20%. As a result, the total tariff rate has reached 54%, approaching the 60% threshold he mentioned during his election campaign.
The European Union has also voiced similar criticism. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Brussels is preparing countermeasures in response to US tariffs. Germany, in turn, plans to join forces with other countries to coordinate economic steps against Washington.
Experts warn that an escalation of the trade war could lead to a global recession and destabilization of world markets.
