On April 3 and 4, a meeting of NATO foreign ministers took place in Brussels, where U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio participated for the first time.
One of the topics discussed at the meeting with fellow foreign ministers was the imposition of new U.S. tariffs. However, according to the New York Times, the atmosphere at the meeting was friendly.
According to a source from the U.S. State Department, the issue of tariffs arose in the context of discussions on the situation in Ukraine, but the conversation was constructive and amicable. It is believed that U.S. representatives aimed to ease tensions regarding the newly imposed tariffs.
It is worth noting that the day before, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on imports from other countries. The base rate will be 10%, but for most countries, the rate will be higher due to the U.S. trade deficit with them. For example, the tariff on goods from the European Union will be 20%. Trump believes these measures will help balance trade relations and contribute to reducing the U.S. national debt.
