Victor Ponta, former Romanian Prime Minister and independent presidential candidate, has vowed to stop the transit of Ukrainian grain through Romanian ports on the Black Sea if he wins the election.
In an interview with Reuters, Ponta clarified that while he supports aiding Ukraine—particularly in areas like weapon transit and pilot training—he opposes the continued transit of Ukrainian grain.
“In recent years, there has been a policy of giving priority to Ukrainian grain in terms of access to port facilities to the detriment of Romanian grain, and Romanian farmers have suffered greatly because of this,” Ponta explained.
Additionally, Ponta expressed approval of the “radical changes” in the United States and outlined his vision for Romania’s future. If elected, he promised to implement a “Romania first” policy, which would include supporting the EU accession of Moldova and the Western Balkans, as well as forging a strategic partnership with Poland and Turkey, the leading military power in the Black Sea region.
