According to Reuters, the U.S. has already begun imposing new tariffs on a range of imported goods, confirmed Commerce Secretary Howard Latnik.
He noted that the tariffs have taken effect without delay, despite the desire of several countries to negotiate with Washington on the matter.
There is no delay… The president needs to reset global trade: everyone has a trade surplus, and we have a trade deficit, Latnik said in an interview with CBS.
According to Reuters, the new 10% tariffs have started to apply at seaports. From today, the U.S. will also impose higher tariffs on goods from its 57 largest trading partners, including the European Union and China.
Meanwhile, world leaders are planning negotiations with President Donald Trump to discuss the possibility of reducing or canceling the tariffs. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to arrive in Washington today, and the leaders of Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam have expressed a desire to engage in talks with Trump.
It is worth noting that the U.S. president’s order has exempted 1,000 categories of goods, such as pharmaceuticals, uranium, and semiconductors, from the new tariffs, though the possibility of imposing tariffs on these goods is still under consideration.
