The Greek government has expressed the view that the migration crisis in Germany is an internal issue for Germany itself.
In a confidential document prepared in Athens, Germany’s migration policy is analyzed, with special attention given to the ongoing coalition negotiations between the CDU/CSU and the SPD.
The document states that initially, the “traffic light” coalition (SPD, Greens, FDP) did not perceive migration as a problem, asserting that it was a natural process and not a cause for concern. However, in November 2022, Germany’s Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, stated that she did not see a serious migration crisis, reassuring that Germany would continue to accept people of various nationalities.
Additionally, the document highlights the attractive conditions for migrants in Germany, such as almost no restrictions on family reunification and the possibility of obtaining citizenship after five years of residence, or in some cases, after just three years.
A representative of the Greek government also emphasized that Germany tends to shift the responsibility for illegal migration to other countries, while itself playing a key role in the situation. Greece is now awaiting the outcome of the coalition negotiations and what they will determine regarding Germany’s future migration policy.
