In 2025, Spain will allocate an additional €2.08 billion for defense needs by reallocating funds within the Ministry of Defense’s procurement contracts, according to Reuters.
Government spokesperson Pilar Alegría stated that the funds will primarily be used for the “modernization, maintenance, and improvement of personnel conditions, infrastructure, and equipment” under existing contracts.
The government is committed to reaching the 2% of GDP defense spending target as soon as possible, she said during a press briefing following a cabinet meeting.
Currently, Spain ranks last among NATO members in terms of defense spending as a percentage of GDP, at just 1.3%. Reaching the alliance’s recommended 2% would require Spain to increase its annual defense budget by approximately €10 billion.
Madrid has previously pledged to meet the 2% target “well before” the official deadline of 2029.
