US raises tariffs on Chinese imports to 104%

Starting April 9, the United States is increasing tariffs on goods from China to 104%, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, as reported by Fox News.

According to Leavitt, the decision was made after Beijing refused to lift its retaliatory tariffs. As a result, starting at noon on Tuesday, the tariff rate for China rises by 50% — from 54% to 104%. The new rates will officially take effect on April 9, Leavitt emphasized.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 54% tariff on all Chinese imports — the highest rate applied to any foreign country.

In response, China said it would introduce 34% tariffs on American goods starting April 10. This triggered a sharp reaction from Trump, who vowed to add another 50% in tariffs against China if it didn’t reverse its latest measures.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called China’s actions and the escalation of the trade war “a serious mistake.”
