In central Warsaw, an eco-activist from the “Last Generation” movement poured red liquid on the memorial to the victims of the 2010 Smolensk disaster. The incident took place in the morning at Piłsudski Square, according to TVN24.
According to Jakub Pacyniak, a spokesperson for the 1st District Police Department, around 10:30 a.m., the perpetrator climbed onto the memorial and poured a blood-like substance over it. Police quickly arrived at the scene, and the square was closed to pedestrians.
According to the “Last Generation” organization, the demonstration was timed to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the tragedy. The activist unfurled a banner reading “We are flying towards catastrophe,” while his fellow demonstrators, dressed in mourning clothes, laid two wreaths — one in memory of those who died in Smolensk and one in solidarity with the victims of the climate crisis.
This group has previously held protests in Warsaw, including blockades of the Wisłostrada. The activists are demanding that revenue from new road construction be redirected toward developing public transport and that a nationwide regional transit pass be introduced, costing 50 zlotys per month.
In March of last year, members of the movement were charged after splashing orange paint on the mermaid statue on the Vistula riverbank.
