Illegal crossings into Europe drop sharply in early 2025, Frontex reports

The number of illegal border crossings into Europe saw a sharp decline in the first quarter of 2025, dropping by over 30% compared to the same period last year. This translates to nearly 34,000 fewer people attempting unauthorized entry, according to a report by Politico, citing the EU border agency Frontex.

While the agency has not pinpointed a single reason behind the decline, Frontex spokesperson Chris Borowski noted that “it is clear that the downward trend observed last year is continuing.”

The decrease comes as the European Union prepares to implement stricter migration policies. Proposed changes include faster deportation processes, harsher penalties for individuals denied entry, and the establishment of return centers in non-EU countries for those awaiting deportation.

Frontex reported fewer crossings across all major migration routes into the EU, with the most notable drop—64%—occurring along the route through Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.

“In many places, we are seeing the results of more active measures against organized smuggling networks and increased cooperation with Frontex, especially in the Balkans,” said Borowski.

He also pointed out that recent agreements with third countries have enabled Frontex to operate at borders between non-EU nations, expanding the agency’s reach.

Despite a 29% decline in activity, the most frequently used route remained the one through Greece, Cyprus, and Bulgaria.

The journey to Europe remains perilous for many. The International Organization for Migration reported that 385 people lost their lives at sea during the first quarter of 2025, a decrease from the roughly 2,300 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024.
