The Kremlin has expressed disagreement with the statement made by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who urged countries to refrain from participating in the May 9 celebrations in Moscow.
Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov commented on the situation, noting that the Kremlin considers Kallas’ remarks unacceptable:
We have taken note of Ms. Kallas’ rather harsh rhetoric. We do not consider such statements appropriate. However, it is not up to us to assess these threats — that is for the sovereign states to which they are addressed. In our view, there are countries in Europe that do not support such rhetoric, Peskov stated.
He added that Russia would be glad to welcome all who wish to take part in the Victory Day celebrations:
We are always happy to see in Moscow those who share with us the pride and joy of this day. We believe that May 9 is an important date for all nations of Europe and the world. It is essential for the future of all humanity, especially Europe, he emphasized.
Earlier, on April 14, Kaja Kallas called on European leaders not to participate in the military celebrations in Moscow as a show of solidarity with Ukraine. In addition, the European Union issued a formal recommendation for EU candidate countries to abstain from attending the parade in Moscow or making official visits to Russia.
Previously, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced his intention to travel to Moscow on May 9, 2025, calling it his “personal duty” and emphasizing that his decision is understood and supported at home.
