Fake tax messages urge Moldovans to back Sandu’s party ahead of 2025 elections

Unknown individuals in Moldova have distributed mass messages falsely claiming to be from the national tax service, urging recipients to support President Maia Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) by donating 2% of their income tax.

These deceptive messages encouraged citizens to “support PAS” and contribute part of their taxes to the ruling party. They also referenced the end of support programs from USAID, adding to the message’s urgency.

Radu Marian, a deputy from PAS, shared an example of the message publicly. He stated that the party had no involvement in the mailing campaign and described it as “another attempt at discreditation, allegedly orchestrated by ‘criminal groups and corrupt politicians.’”

Moldova is preparing for parliamentary elections in 2025, though the official date has yet to be announced. Polls suggest that PAS may face challenges in retaining its parliamentary majority.
