Putin to meet Qatar’s emir in Moscow for talks on Ukraine and Middle East

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to hold talks with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in Moscow, with discussions expected to focus on the war in Ukraine and broader regional developments, the Kremlin announced Wednesday.

“There will definitely be an exchange of views between Putin and the Emir of Qatar on Ukrainian affairs,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “There will also be an exchange of views on regional affairs.”

Peskov highlighted the significance of the Middle East in the discussions, noting the area’s instability and Qatar’s active diplomatic role. “The region is replete with conflict potential. And Qatar plays a very big and important role in attempts to resolve many situations,” he said.

The emir is due to arrive in Moscow on Wednesday and meet with Putin on Thursday. Qatar has previously taken steps to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, including efforts to reunite children from both countries who were separated during the conflict.

“We highly appreciate the potential and current level of our trade and economic cooperation” with Qatar, Peskov added. “And, of course, our confidential dialogue on many topics, including the most sensitive ones.”
