Trump administration imposes additional fees on Chinese ships entering U.S. ports

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the introduction of additional fees for Chinese vessels entering American ports.

This decision comes amid escalating trade tensions between the two largest economies in the world. According to Reuters, the new fees will vary depending on the type and purpose of the vessel.

For ships of Chinese origin, the fees will start at $18 per ton or $120 per container. Higher rates, particularly for vessels under the management of Chinese operators, could reach up to $50 per ton. These measures are being implemented as part of a policy aimed at limiting China’s influence in the global shipping and shipbuilding industries.

The reason for the increased fees is based on findings by the U.S. Trade Representative, who concluded during a recent investigation that China’s policies in shipbuilding and shipping significantly limit American trade opportunities. According to the report, China employs various practices and strategies that put American shipbuilders and operators at a disadvantage.

This measure is part of a broader Trump administration effort to pressure China through a tougher trade policy, which includes the imposition of tariffs on Chinese goods and other economic sanctions. The White House claims that the move aims to eliminate “unfair competition” and protect the interests of American businesses.
