The United States may halt its participation in peace talks regarding Ukraine if significant progress is not made in the coming days.
This was stated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his visit to Paris, as reported by BFMTV.
If our efforts to stop the war in Ukraine fail in the next few days, we will inform President Trump that negotiations are no longer a viable option, Rubio emphasized. According to him, after three years of supporting Kyiv, Washington has reached a “point” where a shift to other foreign policy priorities is needed.
He also noted that the U.S. is not yet ready to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine in the public sphere.
Rubio’s visit to Paris was a landmark event: he participated in the first peace talks on Ukraine involving the U.S., EU, and Ukraine. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called the meeting a diplomatic success, noting that Paris managed to unite key participants in the process.
U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, described the talks as “very productive.” However, Rubio emphasized that the conflict does not have a military solution, and the future of the negotiation process will become clear in the coming days.
If it turns out that achieving peace in the foreseeable future is impossible, the U.S. will focus on other global agenda tasks. We have more serious challenges, he said.
According to the Secretary of State, Europe will inevitably remain part of the process, given that a number of sanctions against Russia fall under the EU’s jurisdiction and cannot be lifted unilaterally by the U.S.
